Roots (Happy Meal – Fringe First winner) are looking to support 8 LGBTQ+ artists to create and perform their writing exploring ‘coming out’. Coming out is a key moment for queer people, and we’re looking for new writing that covers the breath of this experience.

​

This is your opportunity to perform live at York Theatre Royal on Tuesday October 20 2026 in Coming Out Scratch Night. Your performance will be shot and edited by OutFoxed films, creating a record of your artistry. 

​

You’ll collaborate with professional artists, including script development from writer Frazer Flintham (Sky/StudioCanal) and director Séan Linnen (Royal Shakespeare Company), with producing support throughout provided by the team at Roots. 

​

This is a voluntary opportunity, and we’re especially interested to hear from artists aged 18 – 25 based in and around Scarborough, though our opportunities are open to all LGBTQ+ communities throughout North Yorkshire.

 

To aid your script development, we’re able to offer bespoke packages of in-person support working at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, online tutoring, and where relevant, allowances towards your travel and meals to support your in-person work, including your time at York Theatre Royal.

What do we need from you?

 

• Be available to rehearse and perform at York Theatre Royal, October 20th 2026 (14:00 – 20:30).

• Write and develop your 5 minute script ahead of the show.

Otherwise, the meetings, mentoring and training that Roots will provide will be shaped around your availability.
