Call for Artists

Roots

In association with Fern Culture, York Theatre Royal and the Stephen Joseph Theatre

Apply here (closes September 19th 18:00)

Are you a LGBTQIA writer, creator or content maker based in York, Scarborough and North Yorkshire looking for collaboration and a stage? Then we have an opportunity for you…

"No planet, no pride."

The climate emergency affects everyone. However, in focusing the conversation on future generations, climate activism is often explored within hetronormative worlds. But what is the impact of climate changes on queer communities, and what is Queer Climate Action?

In Queer Spaces Climate Pride, we're inviting 8 theatremakers to create their own monologues, writing and then performing at York Theatre Royal and the Stephen Joseph Theatre, their own short work that dramatises these questions through an LGBTQIA lens.

You’ll be working with Roots, Yorkshire’s award-winning queer theatre company, and will receive training from leading theatre makers using the arts to make changes on climate, including writer/producer Amber Massie-Blomfield (Fern Culture), and award-winning performer/artist Max Percy.

We’ll pay you a small fee for taking part.

We’re looking for LGBTQIA storytellers who are excited to create new work, perform and are ambitious to develop their creative experience.

What do we need from you?

  • Be available to rehearse and perform at York Theatre Royal, October 22nd 2025 (14:00 – 20:30)

  • Be available to rehearse and perform at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, October 29th 2025 (14:00 – 20:30)

  • Join an online workshop on Climate Practise, September 29th 2025 (18:30 – 20:00)

  • Write your 5 minute monologue ahead of the show (note: you'll perform the same monologue in both theatres)

Otherwise, any additional meetings, mentoring and training that Roots will provide will be shaped around your availability.

Apply here (closes September 19th 18:00).

All applicants will be informed by email of the outcome by September 22nd 13:00. Please check your spam box.
